About Us

Fifth Avenue Psychiatry began in 1998 as one doctor treating both general adult psychiatry and addiction in a private office setting. With core values of privacy, discretion, and effective personalized treatment, Dr. Glazer became well-known to finance and corporate executives for providing discreet, evidence-based, compassionate care.

Over the last several years, our practice has expanded to include addiction psychologists and other well-trained doctors, providing an array of treatment options for adults and adolescents with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), addictions, and alcoholism.

Though our practice has grown, our core values have remained the same.

We are Addiction Psychiatrists and Psychologists

Addiction Psychiatrists are specialty-trained in both general psychiatry and addiction. We are experts in addiction and alcoholism and treat them with both medical and behavioral therapies. Because we are psychiatrists, we also treat the underlying causes of addiction, which can include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, and PTSD. As Addiction Psychiatrists, we take a compassionate, humanistic, and evidence-based treatment approach with our patients.

Psychiatrists Dr. Glazer and Dr. Megwinoff are specially trained to treat all aspects of mental illness: Biological, Psychological, and Sociological. Dr. Glazer and Dr. Megwinoff offer treatments that implement both psychotherapy and medication.

After a phone consultation, you will be assigned to one of our doctors for a comprehensive in-person evaluation. After establishing a working diagnosis, a fully individualized and comprehensive treatment plan is established in collaboration with the patient.

Our Addiction Psychologists are fully trained therapists with diverse behavioral therapies that include:

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Rational Emotive Therapy
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy
  • Couples Therapy
  • And more

The treatment program may involve a combination of individual psychotherapy, medication management, family meetings, group therapy, or marital therapy as agreed on by the client.

Comprehensive treatment means all treatment will be provided by either Dr. Glazer or Dr. Megwinoff solely or in very close collaboration with our specially trained psychologists.

Specialized Addiction Therapists for Executive Level Professionals

As an addiction psychiatrist,

Dr. Glazer is fully trained in both the newest medical and evidence-based psychotherapeutic modalities. He is nationally recognized for his work with finance executives and other professionals.

For many professionals, the idea of getting treatment for addiction in a treatment program is a massive barrier to entering treatment. At Fifth Avenue Psychiatry, comprehensive treatment of addiction is provided in a private, intimate psychotherapy office.

Women and Alcoholism

Most treatment programs for alcoholism are male-oriented. At Fifth Avenue Psychiatry, we understand women are a unique population when it comes to alcoholism and addiction. Because of our private office setting and individual approach, women can feel safe obtaining treatment and can even choose to work exclusively with a female psychiatrist.

Our treatment team consists of compassionate women who offer personalized solutions using psychotherapy, relapse prevention, medication, and group therapy.

Adult Psychiatry

At Fifth Avenue Psychiatry, treatment is personalized, evidence-based, and draws on many treatment modalities. Our doctors are trained and current with the best evidence-based medication treatment strategies, but our practice strongly emphasizes psychotherapy as the foundation of treatment.

Research shows that the gold standard of treatment for depression, anxiety, and ADHD is combined psychotherapy with medication (as necessary).

Adult Attention Deficit Disorder

A diagnosis of Adult Attention Deficit Disorder usually needs to be substantiated by recent previous neuropsychological testing, or testing can be performed at Fifth Avenue Psychiatry by Dr. Bassett. Dr. Bassett is expertly trained to test for ADD/ADHD in adults and adolescents.

After a diagnosis is confirmed, treatment may consist of medication management, psychotherapy (behavioral and organizational), or both.

Adolescents and Teenagers

Our doctors are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of ADD/ADHD, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, and OCD in Teens and Adolescents. Addiction to social media, gaming, and gambling can be very problematic in this population. Treatment modalities for adolescents and teens include individual psychotherapy, medication management, and family therapy.

Dr. Megwinoff is an expert in these disorders’ psychopharmacology (medication management). She collaborates closely with psychologists in treating adolescents with these disorders. Our psychologists have expertise and training in adolescent mental health disorders and treatment.

Outpatient Detox and Medication-Assisted Treatment

We provide medication-assisted detox (see blog) for alcohol dependence, benzodiazepine dependence (including Xanax and Klonopin), opiate addiction, including prescription painkiller dependence – Oxycontin, as well as help getting off stimulants like cocaine and Adderall. After an evaluation deemed safe, we can often provide safe, comfortable detox as an outpatient in the privacy of our offices or the comfort of your home.

Many substance use disorders and alcohol use disorders respond well to medication-assisted treatment. In the case of alcoholism, Vivitrol, Naltrexone, Acamprosate, Baclofen, and Topamax have shown some utility in helping abstinence and, in some cases, controlled drinking. Recovery rates have shown improvement from prescription painkillers with the use of Vivitrol and Naltrexone, and Suboxone can also be a valuable medication for office-based treatment of opiate dependence. We can evaluate you to determine the most helpful medication and treatment approach for you.

Mental Health-Focused Treatment Approach

Fifth Avenue Psychiatry is unique and progressive in its approach to mental health. Treatment is personalized and research-based, drawing on many treatment modalities. Dr. Glazer and Dr. Megwinoff are board-certified psychiatrists who are trained and current with the best evidence-based medication treatment strategies. They both were trained to believe and practice with a strong emphasis on psychotherapy as the foundation of treatment.

Research shows that the gold standard of treatment for depression, anxiety, and ADHD in both adults and adolescents is combined psychotherapy with medication used judiciously. This is best if provided by the same person or a team of professionals collaborating closely.

Personalized Medicine

Personalized medicine refers to the concept that each individual is unique, and the uniqueness of each patient should be considered when therapies are being determined. Though it seems so simple, this concept is rarely applied to many psychiatric disorders. At its core, personalized treatment is the systematic use of information obtained from the patient to dictate the type and course of treatment.

Our Approach to Medication

We have observed that many people (adolescents and adults) in the process of treatment for a variety of psychiatric symptoms are often overmedicated.

Many psychiatrists routinely treat depression and anxiety with complex medication combinations that are not evidence-based. Many medications commonly prescribed for these disorders are not even indicated or FDA-approved for that particular use.

Another common practice, “polypharmacy,” is when someone is prescribed multiple medications. Usually, there is no evidence that these combinations are effective, can be costly, debilitating, and have no proven therapeutic effect. People can be on these medication regimens often for years only to be exposed to many side effects and potential long-term risks, with minimal relief of symptoms.
